Online dating to meeting up
Kristen Duffy, 30, an executive assistant from Brooklyn, N.
Y., says she’s been using dating apps like Bumble and Hinge since January.
Smith, a podcast host who often talks about dating as a black gay professional on his show, “Category Is…,” is now in a two-year relationship with a man he met on Grindr.
He’s had only one real relationship with someone he met in person: Justin Bettis, his podcast cohost. It’s not that people don’t want to strike up conversations with strangers and fall in rom-com-style love.
Researchers at the University of South Florida looked into the habits of online daters and found the ideal time frame between sending that first message to meeting in person is within 23 days.
The study shows singletons paint mental pictures of their potential date by reading their online dating profile and using that information to fill in the blanks of who their partner might really be.
Technology has changed how people are introduced, and fewer people meet in public places that were once playgrounds for singles.
In the past five months, however, she says she’s only been on three dates.
Study author Artemio Ramirez explains: “Most daters engage in minor and strategic misrepresentations in order to develop positive impressions on their profile page, but doing so might provoke idealised impressions that become increasingly strong and less malleable the longer partners put off meeting face-to-face.”The survey of online daters also found those who meet relatively early are more likely to accept the minor differences between their expectations and reality.
While there are many reasons people could be putting off meeting in person, it is important to remember that meeting sooner rather than later will not only increase the chances of having a successful date, but also save you from disappointment.
“Some people try to throw themselves into dating too quickly off the back of a past relationship.
It’s fine to not be ready – just let the other person down gently and perhaps hide your profile until you feel emotionally stronger.”However, it’s also worth remembering that relationships vary according to people and circumstances, and if you have passed the tipping point date of 23 days you could still be onto something special.
